Story
How
this adaptation product came to be. Yes, it was a gift to
another young girl.
How This
Project Started
I have a wonderful
goddaughter, Pamela Ybarra, who began to read in earnest
at age 6. She liked the little Disney and Golden Books on
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and of course the Disney
video tape version as well.
One day, I
stumbled upon a computer text file of “Alice’s Adventures
In Wonderland”. Well, the thought of going through
all the trouble and expense of printing it out was about
to die when I thought of making it into something special...
“Pamela’s Adventures In Wonderland”. And 401 name
changes later, there was the text nicely personalized. But
no pretty pictures.
Then Clunka-
Chunka – Clunka goes all 75 pages of it through the laser
printer - the one at work..
A coworker came
over to see what epic I had penned this time to gobble up
all those pages. He watched with me as the pages continue
to roll out, one after another. “Just what did you write
this time?”, he asked.
So I told him.
He was excited first because he too turns out to be a fan
of the Lewis Carroll classics. But he was excited for another
reason. His wife was also named Pamela
The First
"Sale"
So we struck
the deal then and there. I would go into town that
night and get myself to the biggest and best Kinko’s copy
center in town (there being only one Kinko’s in town).
My mission was to make a second copy of “Pamela’s
Adventures” and get the best binding that money could buy
at Kinko’s. Well, make that actually anything decent
as a binding except that ugly clunky spiral report binding.
The deal was
quickly done and then, over that weekend, two ladies named
Pamela became proud owners of “Pamela’s Adventures in Wonderland”.
Customer
Feedback
One Pamela was
six (6) years old and the other was about twenty six (26).
But they both loved their special books. And read
them, and re-read them.
Pamela 6 said
that she loved “Pamela’s Adventures” much better than “Alice’s”,
even though there were no pictures or artwork. There
were still the conversations to hold the interest.
Eventually, this
“Adventure” evolved into the product of today: fully illustrated
with the classic Sir John Tenniel woodcut illustrations, a
glossary of the few special terms or arcane terms used in
the work, hardbinding and the scanned/pasted in picture of
the “Pamela”, “Sarah”, “Edith” or “Athena” that owns this
personalized treasure.
Oh yes, another
result is a fine collection of books and articles on Alice
and Lewis Carroll. And a deeper understanding of this unusual
and wonderful man grew out of it. Sometimes when I
tell the Carroll story as I have grown to know it, people
tell me, “Gosh, he sounds a lot like you”. And I smile.
